The city of Nassau, on New Providence Island, is the heart and capital of The Bahamas. The island, once a busy center for piracy, is now home to old fortresses, resort areas, Spring Breakers in March, and too many gorgeous beaches to count.

There are two kinds of beaches in The Bahamas. Cable Beach, one of the largest resort areas in Nassau, is the first type of beach, offering luxury hotels, casinos and any service and water sport that you can think of. The second type is a deserted beach where you will find nothing but clear blue water, soft white sand and sunshine as far as the eye can see. This is where you can retreat from the stresses of life.

The bars of The Bahamas pride themselves on designing their own special recipes for rum punches, maybe because of The Bahamas' history of rum smuggling. There are two casinos, Crystal Palace at the Wyndham Nassau in Cable Beach and The Atlantis on Paradise Island.

The nightclubs don't really get started until after 11, so pass the early evening hours recovering from your day on the beach in the cool casinos, and then hit the clubs. The three main clubs in Nassau are The Zoo, Cocktails and Dreams, and The Waterloo, all huge, with mazes of different rooms. Make sure you go to the featured nights of the major tour operators to avoid heavy cover charges!

Take a day cruise to Blue Lagoon Island where you can snorkel with stingrays, swim with dolphins or just spend all day in a hammock strung between palm trees. Downtown Nassau, with its winding streets of pastel buildings, offers great deals on shopping-souvenirs, straw markets, jewelry, liquor, perfume. The Queen's Staircase, 65 stairs carved out of coral limestone alongside a man-made canyon, offers a great view of the sea and island. Beyond the town of Nassau, there is a bridge to the island resort of Paradise, which has been transformed into one of the most glamorous resort centers in the world. Spend a day luxuriating in the exclusive pleasures at The Atlantis, a super exclusive resort, casino and waterpark.

Whether you're looking for a vacation packed with activities, or to lay around on the beach most of the time, The Bahamas offers both private serenity and plenty of action. A vacation here is whatever you make of it. Create the perfect get-away for yourself in The Bahamas!
